Interesting perspetive on these movies. I disagree with your take on Gladiator, though.

The form of government in Rome was a republic, not a democracy. And the republic pretty much ended in 27 BC when Augustus Caesar made himself emperor. The period depicted in Gladiator is about 200 years later.

Would be interested to know your take on the (original) film Red Dawn.
