Thanks for the writeup, it is and always was a problematic film. What I find hard to believe is that when I was a kid in the '70s, it routinely showed up on the late movie. I don't remember seeing the rape scene (but I'm pretty sure it was there) but I do remember the reveal at the end, which felt to me like a bit of amateur psychology.
